10 Green Holiday Tips for the Home and Office

Ah … the holidays. A time of generosity and good will. Also, a time of excess that often results in extra waste. Studies show that household waste increases by a stunning 25% from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day!

Not only is this statistic a mind boggling, it not sustainable. Think about all the holiday trimmings, packaging, and other compostable  waste that goes directly into a landfill. What if we could make a difference by looking for ways to reduce, reuse and recycle holiday wrappings and gifts?

Sustainable Holidays are a Blessing

Try something really thoughtful this holiday season – rethink how you shop, wrap and celebrate. Identify ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. Make this your gift to the world for generations to come.

10 Green Holiday Tips for the Home & Office:

  1. Reduce Food Waste: This time of year is a time of excess resulting in large amount of food waste. Why not plan for the right amount of food to save money and reduce food waste. If you over estimated, donate the leftovers to a local shelter, food bank or freeze it for later before it spoils.
  2. Recyclable Shopping Bags: Bring your own shopping bags to the mall or grocery stores. Using and reusing cloth bags can reduce the thousands of bags that end up in landfills. If you do use paper or plastic bags, recycle them.
  3. Throw a Green Holiday Party: Going Green for the holidays should be carried over to any parties or gatherings that you have at home or the office. Clearly label recycling containers for cans, bottles and other recyclables. Of course, a Green Party can be held year ‘round, check out our blog, ‘Throw a Green Party this Labor Day’ and make it your New Year’s Resolution to continue your Green Initiatives into the new year.
  4. Forgo the Paper Card & Costly Postage: Sending out Holiday Cards that often end up in trash heaps unread have a triple whammy on the environment – paper comes from trees, delivery costs money, delivery sends carbons into our atmosphere. Using eCards to offer holiday wishes instead. If you feel the absolutely need to send a physical card, use recycled ones & hand deliver, when possible..
  5. LED Holiday Lights & Timers: LED Lights use up to 80% less energy and last 10 times longer. Also, use a timer or turn lights off during the day and late evening.
  6. Creative Gift Giving: The GIFT OF TIME will be much more appreciated than a tacky Christmas sweater or cheesy tie. Give thoughtful gifts that are more meaningful and useful. Give tickets to a show, concert or game; passes to a state or national park, gift certificates for dinner or a spa day. Make your own coupons for personal services, such as free babysitting, a home cooked meal, helping an elderly relative with everyday chores or home maintenance. Think outside the box about ways to spread goodwill and cheer throughout the year!
  7. 10 Green Holiday Tips for the Home & Office:Opt for Eco-friendly Wrapping Alternatives: Use old posters, maps, newspapers, reusable gift bags to present your gifts this holiday season. Cookie tins, flower pots and baskets are a creative and green way to place a present in a present.
  8. Stop Junk Mail: This time of year, the amount of catalogs and charitable donation solicitations can fill recycle bins at lightening speed. Sometimes it feels as if charitable donations go directly into re-solicitations of donations. If you’d like to stop the endless cycle, Check Out this article by eco-cycle that will help your put the kibosh on junk mail.
  9. Rechargeable Batteries: About 40% of battery sales occur during the holiday season. Help out the environment by buying rechargeable batteries and making sure to safely recycle any old batteries.
  10. Recycle Electronics and Cell Phones: This is the time of year when new electronics and cell phones are snatched off the shelf and presented in pretty packages and bags under the tree. PLEASE make sure to safely recycle or find a good home for your old electronics.

The more people that set a GREEN Example, the better chance our society has to succeed in educating those around us how a little thought and creativity can change a mindset that has been long in the making.

Give the world the gift of lowering your carbon footprint –we only have one earth and the holiday season should be a celebration of the beauty of nature, a true gift we all can appreciate!

Make 2017 a Very Green Year!

01/10/2017 by DeniseB Leave a Comment

Have you made your New Year Resolutions?

Make this the year you embrace the spirit of renewal by making it a point to Go Green. Across Europe there is a continual awareness of the limited resources our earth has to provide and the consistent effort to reduce, reuse and recycle. In my travels abroad, I have noticed a tugging guilt about how lax us Americans can be when it comes to minimizing our carbon footprint.

Make 2017 a Very Green Year! While not all of us contribute to the excess and waste, I feel we need to do our part in educating our peers on the ease and necessity of the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). My aspiration for the new year is that those of us who have been living by and preaching Green initiatives will have success in it permeating throughout the United States.

While the United State’s recycling efforts have improved over that last five decades, we are well behind our European counterparts. With countries like Sweden who’s 99% recycling rate, or Switzerland’s 52% rate, nearly double that of the US, it is clear to see that there is plenty of room for improvement.

Some people assume that in order to go green you have spend a lot of time and money in order to make a change. It doesn’t have to. Sometimes it is the simplest things that make all the difference. Want to know a few ways to begin your green lifestyle? Check out our easy and cost effective tips to get started on recycling solutions in Delaware.

10 Great Ways to Go Green:

  1. Use fluorescent light bulbs. Replacing regular light bulb with Fluorescent bulbs use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer!
  2. Shut down your computer. Even in sleep mode, a computer is wasting energy. Turning a computer off at night can save 40 watts each day.
  3. Stock your freezer full. It takes a lot more energy to keep an empty space cool than it does to keep a crowded space cool.
  4. Skip the sink. Avoid rinsing your dishes before loading them and ensure the dishwasher is full before running.
  5. Wash laundry in cold water. 90% of energy consumed by a washing machine is used by heating the water. Wash your laundry in cold water to save energy.
  6. Use cruise control. When driving to work use cruise control to get 15% better mileage and help the environment .
  7. Go Paperless. Pay bills online to eliminate deforestation.
  8. Lighten your load. Extra added weight in a trunk of a vehicle takes more gas.
  9. Recycle cell phones. Don’t let those old cell phones end up in landfills, releasing toxic chemicals into the environment.
  10. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Make every effort possible to have zero waste by rethinking everything that you throw away. If there is a way to use less, reuse or recycle, than just DO IT!

Waste Masters – Proud Partner of the Philadelphia Eagles

10/04/2016 by DeniseB Leave a Comment

Waste Master Solutions is a proud waste solution partner of the Philadelphia Eagles. The commercial trash solution company will collaborate with the Eagle’s organization to increase efficiency in the Lincoln Financial Field and its practice facility, the NovaCare Complex.

This is a Big Deal!

The football team is reported to generate an average of 850 tons of waste each year. Since 2012, the organization has made a concerted effort to recycle and compost, diverting 99% of that waste from landfills.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed an extensive multi-year corporate partnership with Waste Master Solutions this past June as a continued effort with the ‘Eagles Go Green‘ initiative. Last year, Lincoln Financial Field became 100% landfill free!

The Eagles are serious about going green, a few years back they teamed up with NRG Energy, Inc. by installing 14 wind turbines and 11 thousand solar panels — creating the largest solar power plant in the NFL which produces 4 megawatts of energy each year.

The Eagles were awarded LEED certification in 2013 for Lincoln Financial Field from the US Green Building Council particularly for the stadium’s energy and water efficiency, recycling and renewable energy.

Why America Needs to Go Paperless

01/19/2016 by DeniseB Leave a Comment

Our first blog of the year suggested that America needs to wake up and step up it’s Green Initiatives. It’s good for our communities, our nation, our continent, our world.

There are so many ways that those of us in the United States can improve on our 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). We are a throw away society and until more of us speak up about why and how this needs to change, we will continue to needlessly squander the earth’s resources.

One of our readers has asked me to share this infographic titled, ‘How Much Paper is Used in the U.S. in One Day’, by Esker, a document automation company that is serious about reducing the amount of paper that is wasted. When looking at the figures in this infographic, I must admit to a twinge of guilt.

Guess it’s time to add another resolution to my already long list … how about you?

Share with us on Facebook how you plan to JUST QUIT PAPER

Make a New Year’s Resolution to Go Green

01/05/2016 by DeniseB 2 Comments

What’s your New Year’s Resolution? To eat more broccoli, exercise everyday, have more patience with the kids?

While there are many options when making New Year’s Resolutions, most are of a more personal nature. Things such as loose 25 pounds, eat healthier, spend more time with the children, learn how to speak Chinese. The majority of New Year’s Resolutions I hear from year to year are more personal in nature and have nothing to do with improving the world we live in.

Don’t get me wrong, I really respect those people who utilize the fresh new year as a way to revitalize their effort to improve themselves. I gave up New Year’s Resolutions quite a while ago.

However, this year I’m jumping back into the resolution spirit of renewal by making it a point to up my Green Initiatives. Ever since I took a trip over to Europe in January of last year, the waste that goes on in this beautiful country of ours has been weighing heavy on my mind. When you witness a society that is continually aware of the limited resources our earth has to provide and the consistent effort to reduce, reuse and recycle, you start to realize how spoiled and uncaring us Americans can seem.

Go Green America - Just DO ITNow, I don’t mean to cloak all Americans under this blanket of excess and waste. There are many who have been preaching Green initiatives and leading by example, hoping that it will permeate throughout the scattered communities throughout the United States.

While the United State’s recycling efforts have improved over that last five decades, we are well behind our European counterparts. With countries like Sweden who boast a 99% recycling rate, and Switzerland, whose rate is at 52%, nearly double that of the US, it is clear to see that there is plenty of room for improvement.

Why not make a resolution that will have an impact on your community, our country and our world? Practice and preach Green Initiatives and help Going Green to go viral in the US.

Some people might be intimidated by the phrase “Going Green” because most people assume that in order to go green you have spend a lot of time and money in order to make a change. However, it doesn’t have to be as complicated as it seems, sometimes it is the simplest things that make all the difference. So what can do you in order to start your green lifestyle? Follow these easy and cost effective tips to get started!

10 Ways to Go Green America:

  1. Change your light bulbs. Replace just one regular light bulb with a fluorescent bulb. If you don’t like the color, use these bulbs in closets where it won’t bother you as much. Fluorescent bulbs use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer!
  2. Turn your computer off. Although your computer may be in sleep mode, it is still using up energy. By turning your computer off at night you can save 40 watts each day.
  3. Keep your freezer full. It takes a lot more energy to keep an empty space cool than it does to keep a crowded space cool.
  4. Skip the sink. If you have a dishwasher try to avoid rinsing your dishes before loading them and always make sure the dishwasher is full before running.
  5. Wash laundry in cold water. According to Energy Star, 90% of energy consumed by a washing machine is used by heating the water. By washing your laundry in cold water you are saving energy while getting clean clothes!
  6. Utilize your cruise control. When driving to work start using your cruise control. You could get 15% better mileage and as gas prices continue to change almost daily this could save you money and help the environment at the same time!
  7. Pay bills online. Not only is this becoming relatively easier, you will also contribute to saving millions of trees each year!
  8. Clean out your trunk. Extra added weight within your vehicle could also add to more money on gas.
  9. Recycle old cell phones. If old cell phones are not recycled they end up in landfills, but the phones and their batteries are still producing toxic chemicals into the environment.
  10. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Make every effort possible to have zero waste by rethinking everything that you throw away. If there is a way to use less, reuse or recycle, than just DO IT!
